Obligation for Environmental Labelling

13 October 2021

Legislative Decree 3 September 2020, n. 116, transposes EU Directive 2018/851 on waste and directive (EU) 2018/852 on packaging and packaging waste, also makes changes to paragraph 5 of art. 219 of the Legislative Decree of 3 April 2006 n.152 on “Environmental Standards”, effectively introducing the obligation of environmental labelling for packaging.

THE TABLE OF WORK

However, the wording of the labelling requirement introduced by this new standard leaves room for interpretative doubts.

With the aim of responding to the growing questions from companies, guidelines have been outlined for a shared reading of the new rules imposed at national level.

This document, prepared by Conai in collaboration with the Italian Packaging Institute and thanks to the participation of the associations UNI, Confindustria and Federdistribuzione, aims to give a precise indication for the environmental labelling of packaging.

THE DEADLINE FOR ADJUSTMENT

As of December 31, 2020, the obligation has been suspended by Decree-Law No. 183 of 3 December 2020, so-called “Milleproroghe 2021”, which postpones the entry into force of the obligation to 01/01/2022. By that date it will be necessary for companies to comply with the decree.
