Performance of new cosmetic formulation for dry & itchy skin

Published On: 21 August 2025

Dry skin is a frequent feature of chronic skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, and may affect multiple areas of the body. It results from various factors that compromise the integrity of the skin barrier, leading to increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and an unpleasant itching sensation.

To address these effects, it is essential to evaluate the performance of cosmetic formulations in improving skin hydration and restoring the barrier function.

Complife conducted a short-term, placebo-controlled study to assess the ability of a cosmetic cream to enhance skin hydration, strengthen the barrier function, and provide a soothing effect following an irritant stimulus.

Participants: 20 healthy female volunteers aged 18 to 60, with sensitive, dry, and reactive skin.
Endpoints: Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration, soothing effect.
Comparison performed between:

  • Area treated with the test product
  • Area treated with a placebo formulation
  • Untreated area

This comparative approach, supported by reliable instrumental techniques, allows for the objective evaluation of cosmetic product performance—providing robust scientific support for efficacy-related claims.
