Absorption / Penetration / Deposition efficacy is assessed using different techniques:
Absorption of a substance/product may be assessed after topical application on a biological matrix, measuring the amount of substance penetrating, absorbed and deposed on the meambrane. Used models includes synthetic membranes or biological matrices such as human reconstructed tissues (epidermis/full thickness skin/epithelia), human skin biopsies, pig skin and transwell cell system (Caco-2). The reference guideline is the OECD Test No. 428 “Skin Absorption: In Vitro Method”. Involved techniques range from analytic quantitative assays to semi-quantitative/qualitative measurements (immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence).
